This painting began with two completely different reference photos. One was a beautiful stack of balanced rocks. The other was a Rockhopper penguin whose naturally dramatic eyebrows gave it an unforgettable expression.

Somewhere along the way, the two ideas met.

Is the penguin quietly admiring the cairn he created? Is he wondering who moved his favorite rocks? Or does he simply think someone could have found a better way to spend the afternoon?

We’ll never know.

But those expressive eyebrows made me stop, smile, and imagine the story for myself.

Fun Fact: Rockhopper penguins aren’t really grumpy. Their distinctive yellow crests and bold brows naturally give them a wonderfully stern expression.
