As I experimented with abstracts, I began by using pages from an old hymnal I had been given as collage. Growing up, my family often sang from a hymnal while my mother played the piano, and one of my favorite songs was In My Heart There Rings a Melody. As I worked, a small tree naturally emerged in the first painting and went on to shape the other two pieces. Fragments of the hymn remain visible beneath the layers, and those words eventually inspired the titles.
