When I was young, my family had a saying for anyone whispering while others were nearby: “Secrets are lies.” At the time, I thought it was simply funny, a playful warning against being rude. Years later, I found a photo of two meerkats that looked as though one were whispering into the other’s ear. I did not know then how much truth those childhood words would eventually carry.
